The Vatican has announced today that Bishop Robert Finn of the Kansas City-St. Joseph, Missouri diocese has resigned his position as the local ordinary.
As reported by CNA/EWTN:
The Vatican confirmed Pope Francis’ acceptance of Bishop Finn’s resignation according to Canon 104 Article 2 in the Code of Canon Law in an April 21 statement, released at noon local time."
Canon 104, $2 states that:
...a diocesan bishop who has become less able to fulfill his office because of ill health or some other grave cause is earnestly requested to present his resignation from office.”
The "grave cause" in question was Bishop Finn's misdemeanor conviction for "failing to report suspected child abuse by a priest in his diocese," referring to the case of diocesan priest, Fr. Shawn Ratigan, who has been incarcerated for child pornography.
The resignation of Bishop Finn as the local ordinary of Kansas City, Missouri is of immediate effect, though a successor has yet to be chosen by Pope Francis. It is currently unknown what Bishop Finn's future holds.
This decision is of particular significance for the SSPX's USA District Office, as it resides within the diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Missouri, and hence its priests have been praying for Bishop Finn at their Masses during his tenure as the local ordinary.
We invite all to pray for Bishop Robert Finn during this time of trial, as well as for the diocese, and the victims of this sad situation.
